Tahmin ettiğimiz gibi dünkü mesajımızdan sonra epostalar yağmaya başladı.

Aniden İstanbul’un her yerinden hayvanseverler eski konuşmaları bir araya getirmeye, fatih ve çevre bölgelerde baktıkları hayvanlarının nasıl kaybolduğunu hatırlamaya başladılar.

Bu türden onlarca ileti aldık ancak en etkileyicisi ve açıklayıcısı bu oldu. Bir hayvansever tarafından gönderilmiş, korumak için adını vermiyoruz.

Beşiktaş Sinanpaşa Camiindeki kedileri düzenli olarak  besleyen,sorunları yla ilgilenen,hastaları n tedavisine çalışan bir hayvanseverim.

Ne yazık ki camii imamı,güvenlik görevlileri,ara sıra mezarları ve türbeyi temizliğe gelen ve karşılığında gelen gidenden para toplayan yaşlı bir kadın ve çevre esnafının bir bölümü buna  karşı.

Ben her zaman kuru mama,sosis,konserve gibi hayvanların sevdiği ve anında tükettiği yiyecekleri, dağıtmadan, ortalığı kirletmeden vermeye çalışıyorum.Kediler için ayrılan bölümün dışına çıkmadan (mecbur kalmadıkça) dağıtıyorum yiyecekleri. Benimle birlikte kedilere bakan birkaç hayvansever daha var.Ancak çoğu insan bilinçli değil, kedilerin yemeyeceği kurumuş ekmek,simit, bisküvi tarzı yiyecekler atılıyor.Daha kötüsü,orada hayvanlara bakıldığını fark edenler kedi atıyor.

Dün oradaki kedilere çok emeği geçen bir arkadaşımla cami güvenlikçisi ve zabıta arasında tartışma yaşandı.Avluda bir çınar ağacı var,çevresi insanların oturacağı şekilde düzenlenmiş.Bizden önce birisi buraya kuru ve yaş mama ile küçük kaplarda su bırakmış.(oysa orası her zaman pis,oturan insanlar yiyip içip artıklarını bırakıyor)

Tartışma da bundan çıktı,önce bizim bıraktığımız iddia edildi,yapmadığımızı söyleyince biz bırakmamış olsak da bizim temizlememiz gerektiğini,insanları n bizim yüzümüzden kedileri beslediğini söylediler.Zabı ta müdürü de olaya karışınca,benzeri bir olayın yaşanması durumunda kedileri toplatacakları nı söylediler.Zabı ta müdürü,güvenlikçiye isterse derhal Büyükşehire telefon açıp toplatabileceğ ini,bize de camii içinde kedi beslemenin zaten yasak olduğunu söyledi.Geçmişte görev yaptığı bölgede kedileri toplayıp denize atıp BOĞMAK suretiyle öldürdükleini de kendi ağzıyla söyledi!Çok seviyorsak evimize götürüp besleyecekmiş iz 30dan fazla kediyi…

Tartışmanın büyümemesi ve kedilerin toplanmaması için temizledik söz konusu alanı….

Bilen varsa lütfen söylesin,herhangi bir yerde hayvan beslemek yasak mıdır,suç mudur?Oradaki kediciklerin kime zararı dokunmaktadır? Daha önemlisi,hayvan koruma kanununa göre hayvanları yaşadıkları bölgeden alıp götürmek suç değil midir?

Hayvanların toplanması durumunda ne yapabiliriz?ü tfen bilen söylesin?

Ciddiye alınmayacağımı,yazı nın okunmadan silineceğini biliyorum ama bir umut yazıyorum….

Kuşkularımız bu iletiyle doğrulanıyor. Bildik bir hikaye. Hayvanlardan nefret eden insanlar (ki onlardan bir sürü var) bu insanların çabalarını görüp şikayet ediyor. Bunu da Zabıta’nın önünde yapıyor ki kedileri toplayıp attırabilsin.

Korkunç bir suç, bir trajedi. Ama bu iletide iki noktaya önemle eğilmek istiyorum.

1. Zabıta Müdürü’nden öğrendiğimize göre yapılanlar Fatih ve çevre bölgelerde sıradan işler. Müdür, tercih ettikleri ölüm biçimini, kedicikleri denize atıp boduklarını bile anlatıyor utanmadan.
Osmanlıdan bu yana değişen birşey olmadı demek.

2. Ancak gerçekten üzücü ve saçma olan şey bazı hayvanseverlerin boyun eğen ve koyun benzeri tutumu. Bu Zabıta Müdürü’nün bahsettiği şey bir suç. Bu ülkede kedileri toplayıp öldürmek YASAL DEĞİL! Doğrusu, bu Zabıta görevlisinin yaka numarasını ve adını alıp gerekli yerlere şikayet etmekti.
Ama gönüllü arkadaşımız ne yaptı? Hiç… Başkalarının çöpünü temizledi.

Benim gibi hayvan severlere baktığımda çoğu defa büyük hayal kırıklığına uğradığımı biliyorsunuz. Güçlü idealleri uğruna birleşmiş, yine güçlü bir akılla silahlanmış, çalışkan bir etikle donanmış bir gruptan çok uzakta tanık olduğumuz manzara.

Gördüğüm ise korku içinde yaşayan bir sürü insan. Baktıkları hayvanları, tam tersine, korumakla görevli oldukları halde öldürmek isteyenlerden; komşularından ve  yetkilililerden, toplumda gerçek bir değişimi sağlamak için gerekli çalışma ve fedakarlıktan…

Korku bizi belaya girmekten koruyan bir savunma mekanizmasıdır. Hepimiz ara sıra korkarız. Problem, korku hayatımızı ele geçirdiğinde ve bizi ödlek ve sızlanan insanlara dönüştürdüğünde ortaya çıkar.

Bu gerçekleştiğinde umut kalmamıştır. Bu durumda hayvanseverlerin evlerinde kalıp TV seyretmeleri yerinde olacaktır (zaten genellikle yaptıkları da bu).

Türkiye’deki hayvanlar karşılarına birisi çıktığında korkudan titremeye başlayan korumacılara ihtiyaç duymuyor. Türkye’deki hayvanların, kabadayılardan korkmayan, kendinden emin ve yasal haklarının (hem kendilerinin hem de hayvanların) farkında, yürekli ve kararlı insanlara gereksinimleri var.

Bu türden katliamlar her biriniz, internet forumlarında sızlanıp dertlenmek yerine ayağa kalkıp doğruyu yapmak, BİRŞEYLER yapmak kararını alıncaya kadar önlenemeyecek.

Fatih'in Kedileri

As predicted yesterday’s post led into a flurry of emails.
Suddenly animal lovers all over Istanbul started piecing together old coversations, old instances where the animals they cared for in Fatih and neighboring areas had dissapeared.

We received tens of emails of such sort, but this is one of the most powerful and telling. It is sent by an animal lover, we will not disclose her name in order to protect her.

I am a volunteer who regularly feeds the stray cats of Beşiktaş Sinanpaşa Camii, solves their problems, tries to treat the sick ones.

Unfortunately the mosque’s imam, the security guards, the lady who comes around to clean the mausoleum and receives money from the people visiting and the shop keepers in the area are against me.

I always try to feed them with food they love and consume immediately such as dried food, sausages, canned food, so as not to dirty or clutter the place. I try to allocate the food making sure (as much as possible) inside the area specified for the cats. There are some other animal lovers who take care of the cats like me. But most people are ignorant and they throw them stuff they can’t eat like dried bread, simit, biscuits. What is worse, people throw in kittens because they know they are being looked after.

Yesterday a friend of mine who puts a lot of effort in those cats had an argument with the mosque security and a municipal police officer (zabıta). There is a plane tree in the garden around which an area is arranged for people to sit. Someone left there dry an canned food and water in small bowls, before us (and normally this is a dirty place where people sit down, eat and leave their rubbish behind).
This is why the argument started. first we were accused of leaving the food there, then we were told to clean it up even though we hadn’t left it there and people are trying to feed the cats because of us. Then the chief of municipal police arrived and said that if a similar incident occurs they will have the cats collected. The Chief said to the mosque security that he could call the Greater Municipality immediately and have the cats collected, and to us that it is forbidden to feed the cats inside the mosque anyway.
He said with his own words that in the past, at his previous location they used to collect cats and throw them in the sea to drown them!
If we like them so much we should take them home and care for them… more than 30 cats!!!

So as not to take the argument further and to avoid the cats being collected we cleared the area.

If anyone know, please tell me, is it a crime, banned to feed animals anywhere? Who do these little kittens harm? What is more important, isn’t it a crime according to the Animal Protection Law, to remove animals away from where they live?

Please, someone tell us what we can do if the animals are collected!

I am writing with a little hope, although I know I won’t be taken seriously and that what I have written will be deleted…

Our suspicions are confirmed by this email. It’s the typical story.Those people amongs us who hate animals (there are many many) complained about people’s efforts to help. They addressed the issue in front of the Municipal Police who, most likely, collected the kittens and swiftly dispose of them.

This is a horrendous crime, a tragedy. But there are two points from this email that I wanted to emphasize:

1. As evidenced by the Account of the Municipal Police Chief this is common practice in Fatih and adjacent areas. The Chief, without shame, went as far as describing the killing method of choice, throwing the kittens at sea and drowning them.

Not much has changed since Ottoman times…

2. But what is really sad and absolutely absurd here is the subservient and sheepish attitude prevalent in some animal lovers. What that Chief was describing is a crime. It is ILLEGAL in this country to collect cats and kill them. The right thing to do would have been to take note of the name and license number of the police agent and to file a complaint in front of the authorities…

But what did the animal lover in question did? Nothing. She did nothing. She cleared the rubbish away and took away the animals.

It is no secret that I feel an enormous disapointment when I look at my fellow animal lovers. Far from seeing a united group of people led by strong ideals and armed with strong intellects and hard working ethics I see a very different picture.

What I see is a massive amount of people living in fear. Fear for the animals they are protecting being killed by those who are paid to protect them, fear of the reprisals of neighbors and authorities, fear of the work and sacrifice required to implement permanent change in this society.

Fear is a defense mechanism that keeps us from getting in trouble. We all experience fear at times. The problem is when fear takes over our lifes and we turn cowardly and whiny.

When this happens all hope is lost. At that point it would be better for the animals if animal lovers stayed in their homes watching TV (which is what most do anyway).

The animals of Turkey don’t need protectors that will start shaking in fear the moment they are confronted. The animals of Turkey need courageous and determined people who stand up for them, unaffraid of bullys, sure of themselves and well informed about their rights (both theirs and the animals’).

The Fatih Massacre could have been avoided. Animal lovers should have stood up and say NO.

Instead they walked away in fear.

Massacres like this one will continue until you all decide to stand for what is right and DO SOMETHING about it instead of spending your life worrying and whinning on internet forums.

Fatih Camii Bahçesinde Suç ve İnkar

Türkiye’deki hayvanları korumayı kendimize amaç edindiğimizden bu yana pek çok belediyeyle ve yaptıklarıyla uğraşmak zorunda kaldık.

Sarıyer, Beykoz, Eyüp, Karşıyaka, Bolu, Çorlu, Erzurum, Bilecik, Erzincan, Antalya, Van, Didim… liste uzayıp gidiyor. Bir o kadar uzun bir liste de sokak kedi ve köpeklerinin öldürülme emrini veren Belediye Başkanını içeriyor. Onlardan burada bahsetmek istemiyoruz yoksa bu mesaj çizgi romanlardaki kötü karakterlerin listesine dönecek.

Sağdan sola tüm partilerden seçilmiş liderlerin yaptıkları karşısında büyük çaresizlik hissettik. Kimi genç, kimi yaşlı, kimi diğerlerinden daha popülerdi, ancak iki ortak noktaları vardı hepsinin:
1. Hepsi başlangıçta suçunu inkar etti,
2. Sonunda hepsi suçlu çıktı.

Bugün Fatih Belediyesi de bekleneni yaptı. Toparlanıp dün gecenin trajik olaylarını ört bas etmeye çalıştılar. Kimle konuştuğunuza bağlı olarak farklı farklı yanıtlar aldınız. Bazı Fatih Belediyesi görevlileri telefonlarını yüzümüze kapadılar, başkaları bizi mahkemeye vermekle tehdit etti. Diğerleri, mesela Temizlik İşleri Müdürü Veteriner Hekim Aydın Bey bize uzun uzun hayvanları ne kadar sevdiğini, ve kedilere (köpeklere o kadar değil) nasıl tolerasyon gösterdiklerini, asla böyle birşey yapamayacaklarını anlattı.

Aydın bey son derece içtendi.

Ama sorun şu; buna benzer o kadar çok olay yaşadık ki böyle inkarlara prim vermemiz çok zor. Eğer beni biraz itecek olursanız bu kişinin durumdan haberi olmadığı olasılığını kabul edebilirim, ancak bunun olasılığı nedir?

Bir yıldan fazla bir zaman önce Beykoz’un eski belediye başkanı Muharrem Ergül Beykoz Barınağı’ndaki binlerce köpeğin öldürülmesini ve toplu mezarlara gömülmesini ulusal televizyonda defalarca reddetti. Tv programlarına, radyolara çıktı… Bu arada biz Beykoz’da köpek mezarları ve cesetleri bulmayı sürdürdük. Sayın Ergül’ün inkarları devam etti; ta ki Sahip Çıkalım! Belediye ile Beykoz köpeklerinin ortadan kayboluşu arasında bir bağlantı kurmamızı sağlayacak kişi veya kişilere 6000 $ ödül vereceğini açıklayıncaya kadar. Bekleneceği gibi bunları bulduk birkaç gün sonra.

Belediyenin “İtlaf Ekibi”ne verdiği ölüm emrini bulmuştuk. Artık inkar edecek birşey kalmamıştı.

Muharrem Ergül sonraki seçimlerde partisi tarafından aday gösterilmedi.

Fatih Belediyesi şu anda inkar safhasında. Bir süre sonra, basının da baskıyı arttırmasıyla Belediye’deki bazı görevliler çelişkili ifadeler kullanmaya başlayacaklar. Bir ihtimal de  Belediye görevlilerinden birisinin konuşmaya başlaması. Genellikle görülen bir durumdur bu.

Bu defa para vermiyoruz. Mübarek Ramazan ayındayız ve bu konuyla ilgili herhangi birşey bilen varsa kutsal saydığı herşey adına, Allah aşkına ortaya çıksın diyoruz.

Biz bebek kedi katili bir millet değiliz, biz ruhunu parayla satan bir millet değiliz. Biz dürüstlüğe ve sevgiye inanan bir milletiz.

Bunu ispat edelim.

Crimes and Denial at the Fatih Mosque Garden

Since we made our life mission to fight on behalf of the animals in Turkey we have had to deal with the handy work of a big number of municipalities in Turkey.
Sarıyer, Beykoz, Eyüp, Karşıyaka, Bolu, Çorlu, Erzurum, Bilecik, Erzincan, Antalya, Van, Didim… the list goes on. Equally long is the list of Mayors who have ordered the elimination of stray dogs and cats. We wont be mentioning them here, if we did this post would end looking like a list of villains from a comic book series.
We have had to witness and despair at the work of elected leaders belonging to all political parties, from the left to the right. Some of them were older, some younger, some were more popular than others… but all of them had two things in common:

1. They all denied their crimes (initially)
2. They were all proven guilty.

Today the Fatih Municipality did what we expected them to do… they went on to a mad scramble to cover up the tragic events of last night. Depending of who you spoke at the Municipality you got a different answer. Some officers from Fatih Municipality hanged up the phone on us, others threatened to sue us, others, like Aydin bey, the veterinarian in charge of the health department went on a long speech to explain us how much he loved animals, and how they tolerated cats (not dogs, of course), and how they would never do something like that.

Aydin Bey sounded very sincere.

The problem is, I have been involved in cases identical to this one for far too long to give any credit to such denials. If you push me I could accept the possibility of that particular person being unaware of the order, but what are the chances of that?

Over a year ago Muharrem Ergul, the now ex-Mayor of Beykoz denied repetitively, in front of national TV, having had anything to do with the killing and disposal of the thousands of dogs that were living at the Beykoz shelter. He went on TV programs, Radio Broadcasts… in the meantime we kept on finding dog graves and dead bodies all around the Beykoz area. Mr. Ergul’s denials went on until Let’s Adopt! offered a USD 6.000 Reward to the person who provided conclusive evidence of the link between the Municipality and the disappearance of the Beykoz dogs… as expected, a few days later we found this:

We found  the killing orders signed by the Municipality for the Killing Team. There was no point for further denial.

Muharrem Ergul was not presented for re-election by his party.

We are now at denial stage in Fatih. We now predict that as the media pressure intensifies some people at the Municipality will start sending contradictory messages. Chances are one of the Municipal workers will end up speaking up. They always do.

We will not be offering money this time around. As we are in the Holy Month of Ramadan we ask those who may know anything to come forward in the name of all they hold sacred, that is, for the love of God.

We are not a nation of kitten killers, we are not a nation who sells its soul for money. We are a nation who believe in honesty and love.

Let’s prove that...

Mübarek gecenin karanlığındaki çığlıklar – Screams in the darkness of the holy night

Düne kadar İstanbul’un Fatih Camii bahçesindeki durum ülkemizdeki insanlığın en iyi ve en kötü yüzünü bir arada sergiliyordu.

Bir taraftan yüzlerce iyi kalpli insan, gönüllüler bu yüce caminin kedi ve kediciklerine ellerinden geldiği kadar bakar, yiyecek ve su sağlar, sağlık ihtiyaçlarını (çok yetemeseler de) karşılar, güçlerinin yettiği kadarını kısırlaştırıken öte yandan Belediye 5199 sayılı Hayvanları Koruma Kanununa göre üstlenmeleri gereken sokak hayvanalrını kışırlaştırıp, aşılatıp yerlerine bırakmak görevini bile yerine getirmedi. Oysa bu sokak hayvanlarının çoğalmasını önlemenin TEK YASAL VE ETKİN YÖNTEMİ.

Dün gece, kutsal ay Ramazan’ın başlarındaki bu günlerde, dünyanın en yüce camilerinden birinin kutsal topraklarında, önce İstanbul’u sonra da sevgisiyle gönülleri fetheden Fatih Sultan Mehmet’in adını taşıyan bu semtte ve bu caminin bahçesinde korkunç bir suç işlendi.
Gecenin bir yarısında, karanlıkların arasından karnında  iftar yemeğinin artıklarını taşıyan güçlü kuvvatli işçiler kendilerine en kolay avları seçtiler. Onlarca, belki de yüzlerce, kimisi sadece birkaç günlük, annesinin memesine yapışmış, gözleri kapalı bebek kedi, vahşice toplandı, plastik torbalara dolduruldu ve bilinmez bir yerlere atıldı.
Tahminlerimiz bu işçilerin çok uzağa gitmediği yönünde. Çünkü, bu tür durumlarda genel yöntem canlı hayvanlarla dolu torbaların doğrudan çöp kamyonlarına atılmasıdır.
Belediyelerin sokak hayvanlarına karşı tutumu vahşetiyle ün salmıştır. Türkiye’deki hayvanseverler çöp kamyonlarının arkasında ezilerek can veren köpeklerin çığlıklarını kulaklarından silemezler. O ses hep oradadır, ülkemizin “görüntü ve sesler”inin bir parçası olarak izler bizi..
Dün gece kutsal bir mekanda işlenmiş olan bu suç ise konuşulamayacak kadar korkunçtur.
Fatih Belediye Başkanı 25 Ağustos’ta gururla yaptığı açıklamada Sultanahmet Meydanı’nın geleneksel Ramazan eğlencelerinin en renkli merkezi olacağını duyurmuştu. Meydandaki etkinlikler “Ramazan’a Merhaba” temasıyla düzenlenecekti.

Cats of the Fatih Mosque

Until yesterday the grounds of the Fatih Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey, represented the best and the worst of humanity of what this country has to offer.
On one hand hundreds of kind people and volunteers fed and cared for this grand mosque’s  cats and kittens as best as they could. They provided food and water, did their best (although it was never enough) to provide them with basic medical care, spayed and neuter urgent cases when they could afford it.
On the other side the Municipality failed to fulfill its obligation to comply with the Animal Welfare Law 5199 that states that all stray animals must be collected, neutered AND returned to the place where they came from. This is THE ONLY LEGAL AND EFFECTIVE WAY to deal with stray animal overpopulation.

Yesterday night, in the beginning days of the Holy Month of Ramadan, in the holy grounds of one of the worlds largest mosques, one carrying the name of the Sultan who first conquered Istanbul then the hearts with his love, a most hideous crime was carried out.
In the middle of the night, under the cover of the shadows, a team of workers, strong men, with their bellies still filled with their iftar dinner, went around the grounds of the mosque selecting the easiest prey, the kittens. Tens, possibly hundreds of small kittens, some of them barely days old, eyes still closed, still feeding from their mother cats, were brutally collected, dumped in plastic bags and thrown in far away locations.
Our guess is that those brutal workers did not drive too far. The usual practice shown by a multitude of evidence, is to throw the animals alive on garbage trucks.
Municipalities’ treatment of stray animals is legendary in its brutality. The cries of dogs being crushed alive by garbage trucks resonates in the minds of any Turkish animal lover. It is always there, reminding us of the “Sights and Sounds” of our country.
The crime commited yesterday night, on holy grounds, is unspeakable.
On the 25 of August, the Mayor of Fatih, Mustafa Demir, proudly announced that Sultanahmet Square will be the city’s most colorful center of traditional Ramadan entertainment. Events at the square will run under the theme “Hello to Ramadan in Sultanahmet.”

The Night of the 26 of August,  Fatih provided hundred of cats and millions of people around the world with the kind of entertainment it will be difficult to forget.
A brutal spectacle, the cowardly killing of innocent kittens.
Denounce it. Scream. YOU have the power to force the reversal of such brutal policies.

Show them that this barbaric policies belong in the past.. Tell them that it is because of this actions that many people in the West view us as a barbaric nation. Tell them that it is their responsibility and duty to show the world the humane side of this country, and that, Turks are not killers of innocent and helpless puppies and kittens.

Ask them to help you show our real side to the world.

En son buu tür bir mesaj yayınlamamızın üzerinden neredeyse üç ay geçti.

O sırada, Sahip Çıkalım! kendisini Türkiye’deki en büyük hayvan hakları grubu olarak ispatlamış ve dahası, bulunduğu yön itibariyle diğer gruplardan nasıl apayrı bir duruşu olduğunu göstermişti. Diğer İnternet gruplarının faydasız eposta zincirleri, forumları, deli saçması komplo teorileri, yani Türkiye’de HAYVAN HAKLARI SAVUNUCULARINI ŞAKA GİBİ GÖSTEREN hiç bir pislik bulaşmadı bize.

Hayvan haklarını savunanları kimse ciddiye almıyordu. Neden? Çünkü geleneksel olarak hayvanseverler organizasyondan uzak ve anlık hareketlerde bulunuyorlardı.

Çoğu hayvansever ise yangınla tek başına savaşmak zorundaydı… Bunlar tabii “iyi”ler. “Kötü”ler, BURDA SÖZÜNÜ ETMEK İSTEMEDİĞİMİZ MIDE BULANDIRICI KARAKTERLER ise aslında yardım etmeye and içtikleri hayvanlara KARŞI çalışmalar yapıyorlardı.

Sahip Çıkalım! farklı bir secenek sunuyordu. Bilgisayar ekranlarının ötesinde de etkinliği olan bir Facebook grubu… Bugün TÜRKIYE’DE HER BÜYÜK KENTTEYİZ VE ULUSLARARASI AĞIMIZDA ABD, KANADA, İSPANYA, ALMANYA VE GÜNEY AFRİKA’DA BİNLERCE ÜYEMİZ VAR.

Kimileri yakindan bizimle işbirliği yapiyor, kimileri arkadaşlarımız, kimileri hayvanlarımızı sahiplenenler, kimileri problemlerinin çözümüne yardım ettiklerimiz, kimileri de sadece tavsiye almak için bize yazanlar… SİZLERİ ARKADAŞLARIMIZ OLARAK GÖRMEK BİZE GURUR VERİYOR.

Bunu geçmişte de söylemiştik, bir sayı oyunu bu. Ne kadar çok üyemiz olur ve ne kadar çok kişi gönderdiğimiz mesajları görürse, hayvanlara sahip bulma şansımız o kadar artacak. Bu nedenle bütün üyelerimize, arkadaşlarını Sahip Çıkalım! 2 grubuna davet etmelerini, ve davet ettikleri kişilerden de aynısını yapmasını istemelerini rica ediyoruz.

Last time we sent a similar message to this one was about three months ago.

Back then, Lets Adopt had consolidated itself as the largest animal welfare group in Turkey, furthermore, what had clearly begun to be evident is that this was a direct action group totally different from others. None of the forums and useless email chains of other internet groups, none of the crazy conspiracy theories, basically, none of the bullshit that has turned TURKISH ANIMAL WELFARE ACTIVISTS INTO THE BUTT OF ALL JOKES.

Nobody takes animal activists seriously.  Why? Because traditionally animal lovers have acted in a disorganized and haphazardly fashion.
People have been fighting fires on their own.. and those are the good ones.. the bad ones, REPULSIVE CHARACTERS WHO DONT DESERVE TO BE MENTIONED have actually been working AGAINST the animals they had sworn to protect.

Lets Adopt offered an alternative. A Facebook-based group with ramifications far beyond the computer screens. Today we have active groups IN EVERY MAJOR CITY IN TURKEY AS WELL AS AN INTERNATIONAL NETWORK WITH THOUSANDS OF MEMBERS IN THE US, CANADA, SPAIN, GERMANY AND SOUTH AFRICA.

Those who have been working closely with us, our friends, those who have adopted our animals, those that we have helped with their problems or simply those who have written to us asking for advice know the way we operate AND WE ARE PROUD TO CALL YOU OUR FRIENDS.

We have explained this in the past, this is a numbers game, the bigger number of people that receive our emails and get to see the animals we are trying to help the bigger the chances for adoption. This is why, we would like to ask all our members to please invite all their animal lover friends to Lets Adopt 2 and ask them to do the same:

Some of the new members (and old as well) will leave, some will stay.. it is entirely natural, but what is important is that, week after week, our ability to help animals where help is needed, WE NEED TO GROW.

Sevgili arkadaşlar,

Hera ve Hera gibi çocuklar Sahip Çıkalım!’ın Türkiye’deki ödün vermeyen tutumunun en önemli nedenleri.

Hera, b;r üyemiz tarafından kurtarılarak pansiyona yerleştirildi. Birkaç gün sonra üyemiz bize köpek için bir aile bulduğunu bildirdi.
Ona bu ailenin bizim 2 kriterimize uygun olup olmadığını sorduk:
- Ailenin bir köpeği daha olmalı
- köpek bahcede değil evde yaşamalı

Aile her iki kritere de uymuyordu; köpekleri olmadığı gibi Hera’ya bahçede, bir kulübede bakacaklardı.

Üyemize sahiplenmeyi iptal etmesini önerdim. O farklı düşünerek köpeği aileye verdi.

Bir hafta bile geçmeden köpek geri geldi. Neden? Komşuları köpekleri sevmediği ve bebeği öldürmekle tehdit ettiği için.

Hera, güzel, tatlı bir melek ve dışarısı canavarlarla dolu. Neden birisi onu sahiplenip bahcede her türlü tehlikeye maruz kalmak üzere
bıraksın, anlayabilmem mümkün değil.

Burada test sürüşüne çıkartsınlar veya bahçelerinde süs eşyası olarak kullansınlar diye köpek sahiplendirmek için bulunmuyoruz. Tüm çocuklarımıza kusursuz aileler bulmak için buradayız. Bütün hayvanlarımız evlerinde uyur, kanapede oturur ve çiğ etli kemik yerler.

Başka birşeyi de kabul edemeyiz. Sahip Çıkalım! bu konularda kesinlikle taviz vermeyecek. Koşullarımıza uymuyorsanız hayvanlarımızı sahiplenemezsiniz.

Hera’yı sahiplenin… O, ailenizin bir parcası olmak isteyen küçük bir bebek. Tabii ki dışarda yaşamak ve İstanbul’un buz gibi kışında
soğuktan titremek istemiyor.

Dear Friends,

Hera and animals like Hera are the reason why Let’s Adopt! Has the toughest adoption policies in Turkey.

Hera was rescued by one of our members and put on a pension. After a few days she contacted us to tell us that she had found a family for the dog. We asked if they complied with our two main conditions:

- family MUST currently have a dog
- dog will live inside the house, NOT in the garden.

The family did not comply with either of our conditions, they did not have a dog AND they were planning to keep the dog in a dog home at the garden.

I adviced her to cancel the adoption. She decided otherwise and gave the dog to them.

Barely a week later the dog was returned. Reasons? The neigbor didn’t like dogs and threatened to kill the puppy.

Hera is a beautiful, sweet little angel and there are many monsters out there. Why would someone adopt an animal to keep him out in the garden exposed to all those risks is totally incomprehensible to me.

We are not here to give away dogs to people who simply, want to give a dog a test-ride, or to those who want a living piece of furniture for their garden.. We are here to find perfect families for our animals.

All our animals sleep at homes, sit in sofas and eat Raw Meaty Bones.

Nothing else will do. Let’s Adopt won’t ever compromise on this issues. If you don’t comply with our conditions you simply won’t get one of our animals.

Adopt Hera… She is a beautiful puppy who wants to be part of a family. She certainly does not want to live outside freezing in the cold Istanbul winter…

Sadece 2 hafta önce Lakita İspanya’da bir barınaka yaşıyordu. Dünyanın her yerindeki çoğu barınakta olduğu gibi buradaki koşullar da onun için uygun değildi.

Sahip Çıkalım! uluslararası ağını kullanarak Lakita’nın kurtarılmasını ve sahiplenilmesini organize etti. Önce onu arabayla Endülüs’ten Madrid’e getirdik, buradan da Kanada’da Edmonton’a uçtu.

İşte şimdi orada… bu resimleri birkaç saat önce aldık.

Lakita's previous home in Spain

This is proof of the potential of the Let’s Adopt Network.

Two weeks ago Lakita was living on a Spanish shelter. The conditions there, like in the vast majority of shelters around the world, were not suitable for her.

Let’s Adopt, by using its international network coordinated her rescue and adoption. First we drove her from Andalusia to Madrid, and from there we flew her to Edmonton Canada.

And here she is.. we received this great picture barely an hour ago…

Following the North American Journey of Federico Garcia Lorca, a poet in New York, Lakita is now an andalusian dog in Canada. We wish her the best in her new life with Grace.

Let’s Adopt!… amazing people.

Over the coming months we will establish a network of adoption into Canada and the US. We will therefore need flight volonteers to fly
into any location in the US and Canada from Turkey and Spain.

Melike Acar Çizgi Roman Projesini iftira, hakaret ve baskılar yüzünden bırakıyor…

Melike Acar’ın Sahip Çıkalım! çizgi roman projesinden ayrıldığını büyük bir üzüntüyle duyurmak zorundayız.

Kendi sözcükleriyle:

Baskılar,davalar,kanıtlar,yeni yeni düşmanlar,bağırıp hakaret edenler,küsenler,küfredenler, boktan internet gazetelerinde adıma, mesleğime, namusuma leke sürmeye kalkanlar.. Bunlar henüz başlamadan tek bir çizim yüzünden oldu.. yemek yiyemiyorum, 1 haftadır uyumuyorum ve 2 gündür durmadan ağlıyorum.. Sağlık nedenleri yüzünden kendime gelene kadar Let’s Adopt projesine ara veriyorum. İlgililerin anlayışını bekliyorum.

Son birkaç gündür Melike inanılmaz bir baskıya maruz kaldı. Hepimizin çok yakından tanıdığı iki kişi hayatını çekilmez hale getirdi. Onu vatan hainliğiyle, teröristlikle, Sahip Çıkalım’a üye ve benim arkadaşım olmakla suçladılar.

Neticede Melike internet karalamacılarının baskılara dayanamadı ve vazgeçti.

Onun gidişi bu projenin sona erdiği anlamına gelmiyor. Sahip Çıkalım! baskılara asla boyun eğmeyecek. Bu acınası insanlar aramızdan birisinin moralini bozabilirler ama ülkemizin en büyük hayvan hakları örgütlenmesi olan grubumuza hiç bir zarar veremezler. Dahası, ben ben olduğum sürece Sahip Çıkalım!’ın politikasını ve kararlarımızı asla etkileyemeyezler.

Önünmüzdeki günlerde bu projenin sorumluluğunu üstlenecek sanatçı ve/veya sanatçıları açıklayacağız.

Türkiye’de “hayvanseverler” konusunda rüya aleminde değilim. Tek istediğim hayvanların iyiliği ve hayatım boyunca tek bir “hayvansever”le daha muhatap olmazsam mutlu öleceğim. Ülkemizdeki hayvan hakları hareketi derbeder durumda çünkü insanların tek yaptığı konuşmak, işe girişmek değil.

Sahip Çıkalım! insanlara örnek olarak onları yönlendirmek üzere kuruldu ve bunu yapmaya devam edecek. Ancak biz hayvanları özgürleştirmeye çalışır, insanların cehaletiyle, hayatlarımıza ve onurumuza karşı saldırılarla, hakaret ve karalamalarla savaşırken hayvanlar kafeslerinde, barınaklarda, cadde köşelerinde, zincirlerin ucunda, atıldıkları ormanlarda susuzluk, açlık ve çaresizlikten kurtarılmayı bekliyorlar.

Her millet hakettiği kaderi yaşar ve öyle görünüyor ki bu milletin hakettiği kader de bu.

To be continued...

Melike Acar leaves the Comic Book project due to slander and pressure.

It is with profound sadness that we must announce the departure of Melike Acar from the Let’s Adopt comic-book project.

Using her words:

“Pressure, court cases, evidences, new enemies, people who shout and insult, quarrel, swear, those who slander my name, my honor, my profession in shitty internet newspapers… All this because of a single draft drawing before I have even started. I cannot eat, cannot sleep for the last week and for I have been crying for the last 2 days. Because of health reasons, until i pull myself together I am postponing the Let’s Adopt! Project. I expect those involved to understand me.”

Over the last few days Melike has been put under amazing pressure. Two individuals whom we all know very well have, simply, made her life impossible. They have accused her of being a traitor to the homeland, of being a terrorist, of supporting Let’s Adopt!, of being my friend….

So in the end Melike couldn’t take the pressure of those internet slanders and gave up.

Her departure doesn’t mean the end of the project. Let’s Adopt won’t ever bow to pressure. These deplorable people can pick and demoralize one of us but they have nothing to do against the largest animal welfare movement in this great nation of ours. Furthermore, as long as I am who I am they will never be able to dictate Let’s Adopt policies or influence our decisions.

In the coming days we will be announcing the artist / artists who will be taking the helm of this project.

I have no illusions about animal lovers in Turkey. All I want is the good of the animals and as far as I am concerned if I never spoke to another “animal lover” I would die a happy bunny. Animal welfare in Turkey is a mess, and it is so because people talk so much and do nothing. Let’s Adopt was created to lead people by example and you can be sure we will continue doing that. But whilst we devout our lives to free animals, to fight people’s ignorance, their threats to our lives and honour, their insults and slander,  the animals wait to be saved from hunger, thirst and desperation in cages, shelters, at the corners of streets, chained to posts, dumped into forests…

Every nation is lives the fate it deserves and it seems that this is what this nation deserves.

Melike, we wish you the best and will support your work every step of the way.  We understand your decision and respect it.

Neden?

Çünkü Tattoo kör, ve İstanbul’da bir veteriner kliğinde küçük bir kafeste kendisini sahiplenecek aileyi bekliyor.

Tattoo gercek bir kedisever tarafından sahiplenilmeli. Bu kişi kedilerin de duyguları olduğunun, kör de olsalar normal bir yaşam sürebileceklerinin farkında olmalı.

Kör kediler muhteşemdir, üyelerimizden kör kedi sahiplenenlere bir sorun… Ve evinize muhteşem bir can getirin.

This is Tattoo… a beautiful 4 week old kitten who wants to run, and play, and be with other cats but he cannot..

Why can’t he?

Because he is blind… and he lives in a cage in an Istanbul veterinarian whilst waiting for a family to adopt him.

Ta ttoo needs to be adopted by a real cat lover. Someone that understands that cats have feelings, and that even if they are blind they can have a great, normal life.

Blind cats are amazing… bring an amazing animal into your home.

Bu olağanüstü köpeğe bir bakın. Adı Boris.

Boris bir Golden retriever-Husky kırması.

Eminönü Pazarı’nda fiyatı 400 liraydı. Hayvan satıcısı bebeği satın alan cahil serseriye gözlerinin başka renklerde olmasının şans getireceğini söyledi.

Ve Boris 400 liraya satıldı. Sahibi maganda Boris’i alıp zincirledi, sonra da tamamen unuttu. Boris aylarca bir kap kirli su ve kuru ekmekle sürdürdü hayatını.

şimdi İstanbul’da biryerlerde salağın biri zincire bağlı köpeğinin yerinde yeller estiğini sonunda farkedip gözlerine inanamıyor. O köpek şimdi bizimle.

Sadece çok güzel değil Boris, son derece zeki, aktif, mutlu ve harika bir köpek aynı zamanda.

Boris… rescued from his chains.

Look at this amazing dog.  His name is Boris.

Boris is a Golden-Retriever/Husky mix.
Boris was sold at the Eminonu animal trader center for 400 lira. The animal seller explained the uneducated brute that bought him that this dog was very special, that his eyes were a sign of good luck.
So he was sold for 400 lira. The maganda took him home and chained him… he then forgot about him… for months Boris struggled to survive with a few crumbs of bred and dirty water.
Today, somewhere in Istanbul there is an educated brute looking in disbelief at the chains that once held a beautiful dog prisoner. That dog is now with us.
Let’s Adopt! rescued him.
Boris is not only beautiful.. he is extremely inteligent, happy, active, an amazing dog.
Adopt him.

Adoptions are subject to approval. Our requirements have been developed in time and with experience to maximize the chances that the adopted animal lives a fulfilling, happy life without any risks of being thrown out in his lifetime. Therefore, we care about them very much.

Requirements are:
- You need to have at least one more animal (fish, turtles, birds, hamsters don’t count)
- Your animals will be looked after at home, not in your garden

Ray, Kalbiyle Gören Yaşlı Ruh – Ray, The Old Soul Who Sees Through His Heart

Bu köpeği bu akşam sokaktan kurtardık. Kaybolmuş görünüyordu, amaçsızca dolaşıyordu. Neredeyse bir otobüs tarafından ezilecekti.
Bir bakın ona…
Yaşlı.
Tamamen ihmal edilmiş.
Kör.
Bazıları için Ray’in çöpeten farkı yok.
Yarın onu doktora götürüp gözlerindeki enfenksiyonu tedavi ettireceğiz. Bakalım gözlerini kurtarabilecek miyiz.
Ardından kuaföre gidecek hayatında ilk defa. Kıtık kıtık olmuş saçları kesilecek, yıkanacak, yaraları iyileştirilecek.
Onun için özel bir aileye ihtiyacımız olacak… Çok tatlı, kedilere bayılıyor ve köpeklerle çok iyi geçiniyor.
Yaşlı ve kör bir ruh…

Ray after a good makeover

Ray hakkında son gelişmeler!

Ray, daha bilgisini verdiğimiz gece sahiplenildi.

ABD’deki bir üyemiz Ray’in hikayesinden o kadar etkilendi ki ona ömrünün sonuna kadar mutlu olabileceği bir yuva vermek istedi.

Dün klinikte, gününü check-up ve kuaför salonunda geçirdi, Ray. Gerçek yaşının tahmin ettiğimiz gibi 10 değil sadece 3 olduğunu öğrendik. Kötü durumu yıllar süren ilgisizlikmiş belli ki.

Ray, kataraktı nedeniyle kör, ancak ameliyat edilebilir durumda. Yeni ailesinin yapacağı ilk iş Seattle’a gelir gelmez Ray’i bir göz cerrahına götürüp ameliyat ettirmek olacak.

Yani bir gece içınde Ray’in hayatı 180 derece değişti. Şu anda İstanbul’da harika bir geçici evde kalıyor. Bir hafta kadar sonra ise yeni ailesine, bir köpeğin de duyguları olduğunu anlayan insanların yanına gidecek. Onlardan öyle az var ki…

We have rescued this dog from the street this afternoon. He was looking lost.. wandering aimlessly.

We was about to be hit by a bus.

Look at him.

He is old.

He is completely neglected.

He is blind.

To some Ray is garbage.

Tomorrow we will take him to the vet and have his eyes cured. The infection will be treated. We will try to save them if that is possible.

He will then go to the Pet Salon for the first time in his life. He will be shaved, and washed, his injuries will be healed.

We will need a very special family for him.. he is lovely, gets along with dogs and cats.

He is an old blind soul…

Ray at the clinic

UPDATE ON RAY!!!

Ray was adopted the very same night we publicized his case.

One of our members in the USA was very taken by Ray’s plea and offered a forever home.

We couldn’t have been happier.

Yesterday Ray spent the day at the vet, first he had a full check up.  His real age was determined,  he is not over 10 years old as originally suspected, he is no more than three years old. His poor condition was due to extreme neglect.

Ray is blind due to cataracts, but of the operable kind. The first thing his new family will do when he lands in Seattle will be to take him to the eye surgeon and have his sight restored.

So… overnight Ray’s life has taken 180 degree turn. He is now staying at great foster home in Istanbul and will be flying to his new country within a week, leaving behind years of abuse and neglect and starting a new happy life with a loving family which understands that a dog has feelings, something very, very few people seem to understand…

Grace ve bebekleri hakkinda son durum — Update on Grace and her puppies.

Sevgili arkadaşlar,

Dün geceGrace ve minik bebeklerini kaldıkları evden almak için Mahmutbey’e gittik. Uzun ve yorucu bir yolculuktu, eve döndüğümüzde saat 1 olmuştu.

Kısaca hatırlatalım, Grace 7 hafta kadar önce bulundu, veteriner hekimin kontrolünden geçti ancak ileri derecede hamile olduğu tespit edilemedi. Geçici evine gelişinin 2. gününde 3 dünyalar güzeli bebeği oldu.

Onlara Tayland’da yaşayan yeni ve tatlı arkadaşlarımız onuruna Vernon (oğlan), Allie (kız) and Petuk (kız) isimlerini koyduk.

Bundan sonra olanları anlatmak çok güç. O ya da bu sebeple (tabii hepsi son derece geçerli!) Grace gittiği 3 geçici aileden de geri gönderildi. Ne Grace’de ne de bebeklerinde bir sorun yok. Durum işte bu. Yavruların fotoğraflarına bakmak çok tatlı ama iş gerçeğe dönünce herşey farklılaşabiliyor. Bu nedenle bizden yavru köpek almak isteyenler konusunda çok dikkatliyiz. Yavru köpekler köpeklerin Ferrari’si gibidir. Herkes Ferrari kullanamadığı gibi herkes yavru köpek sahiplenemez.

Dün gece Grace ve bebeklerini İstanbul’da bir pansiyona bırakmak zorunda kaldık. Onları orada, hayatlarında ilk defa kafese girmiş olarak görmek çok acı vericiydi. Ne yapacaklarını bilemeden bir köşede birbirlerine sarılıp kalakaldılar.

Bu görüntünün verdiği acıya bir de Türkiye’nin hayvanseverleri biraraya getiren bu gruptan hiç kimsenin, HİÇ KİMSEnin, tek bir üyenin bile yardıma gelmediğini bilmek ekleyin. Aranızdan hiç kimse bana bu bebekleri almak istediğini belirten bir mesaj göndermedi.

İki yıldır elimizden geldiği kadar, ve pek çok şeyden fedakarlık ederek, kim yardımımızı istediyse yanında olduk. Bu andan itibaren yardım taleplerini kabul etmeyeceğiz. sadece yardım etmek isteyenlerin mesajları yanıtlanacak.

Şu anda geçici evlerde pek çok hayvanımız var ve hepsi birer birer geri gönderiliyor. Bu çocukları kalıcı evlerine yerleştirmenin zamanı geldi.

Grubun bundan sonraki aylardaki tek amacı bu olacak. Elimizdeki projeleri tamamlayacak ve yeni proje kabul etmeyeceğiz. Sorumluluğumuz altındakileri sahiplendireceğiz ancak başkalarını kurtaramayacağız. Üyelerimiz SORUMLULUK ve BAĞLILIK sözcüklerinin anlamını öğrendiğinde Sahip Çıkalım! bambaşka ufuklara açılacak.
Şimdi ise Grace ve bebeklerine bir yuva bulmamız gerek.

Grace

Dear Friends,

Yesterday night we drove to Mahmut bey to collect Grace and her 3 puppies. It was a long and exhausting drive and we arrived back home at 1 in the morning.

Let me give you a quick reminder.. Grace was rescued 7 weeks ago.. she was taken for a check up but the vet failed to see she was heavily pregnant. After two days in her foster home she delivered three beautiful puppies.

We have named them Vernon, Allie and Petuk in honor of our new good friends in Thailand.

What happened next defies description.. for one reason or another (all of them very valid, of course), Grace has been returned by 3 foster homes. Nothing wrong with her or the puppies. This is just the way it is. Puppies are very cute to look at in pictures, it is a different story to have them with you. This is the reason why we are extremely careful and sceptical at people wanting to adopt puppies from us. A puppy is like the Ferrari of dogs. Not everybody knows how to drive a Ferrari, very few people are able to handle a puppy.

Yesterday night we had to place Grace and the kids in cages at an Istanbul pension… It was very sad to see them there, caged up for the first time in their lives, not knowing what to do, huddling up to each other.

To add to the sadness of  seeing this image is the fact that I kept of thinking that nobody, NOBODY, not a single member in the largest group of animal lovers in this country came to offer his help. Not a single of you sent me an email and offered to take on any of those babies.

Let’s Adopt has some amazing members, extraordinary people, you know who you are and you know what you do.. unfortunately the large majority of its members are just here to be entertained and wont lift a finger to help. It is extremely disappointing.

This is making us re-asses the future of this group and our goals. As of today Let’s Adopt wont be handling any more rescues until we have placed the ones we have in our adoption files.  Here:

For two years we have helped everybody who asked for our help, we have done so to the best of our knowledge and with great sacrifice. From on on we wont be able to answer any request from help. Only those emails offering their help to the group will be answered.

We have a large number of animals currently in foster homes and being returned on a daily basis. We now need to place all those animals in final homes.

This will be the sole objective of the group over coming months. We will finish the projects we started but wont start new ones.. we will place the animals we have under our responsibility but we wont be able to save new ones. Once our members learn the meaning of the word RESPONSIBILITY and COMMITMENT then Let’s Adopt will be able to reach new heights.

It gives us great pleasure to announce that Let’s Adopt! will be working with the international renowned artist Melike Acar ( http://www.facebook.com/pages/Melike-ACAR/18396619980?ref=mf)  in the production of a series of a series of comic strips about cruelty against animals and animal rescues.

Acar, a Turkish woman working on a typically male-American dominated industry, crosses the barriers of gender, language and culture and connects to us through her unique art. Her style, drawing on a variety of influences has a depth and darkness that will be perfect to depict the difficult issue of cruelty against animals.

We are honored to have been given the unique opportunity to work with Melike and can’t wait to see the result of this experience.

Queen Mary sıradan bir kedi değil.

Bacağını bir trafik kazasında kaybetti (insanlar araba kullanmasını) bilmiiyor. Şimdi gayet iyi. Oyuncu kedicik halleri hiç geçmedi ama. Koşmayı, zıplamayı, hatta ağaçlara tırmanmayı bile öğrendi (çok iyi bir tırmanıcı olduğunu söylemeliyim). Yine de mahalledeki diğer kediler gibi olması imkansız. Kabul edelim ki kış mevsimi sokak hayvanları için yeterince zor, üç bacaklı hayvancıklar için daha da zor.
Yani, Mary’nin bir eve ihtiyacı var.
Bana bu tür vak’aların gelmesine memnun oluyorum. Sahip Çıkalım!’ı bugüne getiren bu tür kedi ve köpekler oldu. Bundan iki yıl önce kör veya engelli bir hayvanın evlat edinilmesi düşünülemezken Sahip Çıkalım! “kusurlu” bir hayvanı evlat edinmeyi ve gururla taşımayı mümkün hale getirdi.
Bu grupta inanılmaz insanlar var, ve şu anda her zaman olduğundan daha büyük bir hızla büyüyoruz, yani hergün aramıza pekçok yeni üye katılıyor. Bugün iki görev var önümüzde:

a. Queen Mary’yi sahiplenin… Çok tatlıi bir bebek!

Queen Mary

Queen Mary here is no ordinary cat.

She lost her leg on a traffic accident (people dont really know how to drive)…
She recovered great.. Her playful kitten character never changed.  She learned how to run, how to jump, even how to climb the tree with three legs (she is not a great climber I must say)… Still, she is not as fast as the other cats on the street, and lets face it, winters are very very tough out there and so much more so for a three legged animal.
So… Mary needs a home.
I love to be entrusted these cases. It is cases like this that have made Let’s Adopt the organization it is today. When we arrived onto the scene two years ago it was unthinkable to find a home for a blind dog, or a handicapped animal. Let’s Adopt has made acceptable to adopt an “imperfect” animal, and to display it with pride!
We have amazing people in this group, and, right now we are growing as fast as ever which means, more people like us are joining every day.

So… Two tasks for today:

a) Adopt Queen Mary… she is an amazing kitten.

b) Invite everyone on your friendslist to Let’s Adopt. Make the Let’s Adopt tribe grow. Growth, and the creation of the country’s largest network of animal lovers is what enables us to do what we do.

Bildiğiniz gibi Sahip Çıkalım! kuruluşundan beri ülkemizdeki veteriner hekimlik standartları konusunda sesini yükseltmiştir. Kısaca söylemek gerekirse durumu çok parlak görmüyoruz.

Herşey gözler önünde… Hayvanları sevdiği için değil Tıp fakültesine giremediği için veteriner olanlar, mezun olur olmaz sokak köpeklerinin kontrolü için belediyelere giren ve yakaladıkları hayvanlara şefkat ve empati göstermek uzak olanlar…

Kırık bir bacağın tedavisini bacağı kesip atmakta görenler, veya alçıyı doğrudan hayvanın derisine uygulayanlar.

Durum öyle kötü ki Sahip Çıkalım! Veterinerlikte Kusursuzluk ödülünü koymak ve iyiyi kötüden ayırmak gereği duydu ki üyelerimiz hangi veterinerlerin hayvanlarını öldürmeyip kurtarabileceğini bilsinler (Prof. Dr. Kürşat Öner bu ödülü almayacak mesela).

Ancak bazen, nadiren de olsa, ufak umut pırıltıları görüyoruz. Bulaşıcı sevgi  ve hayvan hayatı kurtarma tutkusu olan gerçek profesyonellerin işine yakından bir bakış….

İşte bu, o hikayelerden biri.

Ona, kliniktekiler Joker dese de biz sürekli gülümseyen güzel yüzü nedeniyle Gülümser demeyi uygun bulduk.

İstanbul’daki bir veteriner kliniğine kutu içinde getirilmişti. Kutu açıldığında klinik çalışanlarının gördükleri manzara karşısında dona kaldılar. Orada, 4 haftalık minik bir bebek yatıyordu ve neredeyse tamamen kurtlar tamamen yenmişti. Solucanlar bir kulağını, dudaklarını ve dilinin büyük bölümünü yemişti. Diğer bulguları anlatmıyorum bile.

Sokak kedimiz aklımıza gelebilecek en kötü durumdaydı.

Veterinerimiz hayvanı baştan ayağa kontrol etti. Durumu kritik görünüyordu.

Yine de bu bebek savaşmaya kararlıysa ona hayata tutunmak için her fırsatı sağlayacaklarına karar verdiler.

Gülümser gayet iyi. Müthiş bir savaşçı. Enfeksiyonlara karşı tüm gücüyle mücadele ediyor. Bir aslanın iştahıyla yemek yiyor ve sürekli ilgi istiyor, kollarınıza aldığınızda hemen şarkılar söylemeye başlıyor. Bu işten sağ salim çıkacağına kuşkumuz yok ama yine de sizden bu meleğe bir dua göndermenizi rica ediyoruz. Bugünkü mesajımızın amacı bu.

A Baby Miracle of Life

As most of you know from its inception, Let’s Adopt has been very vocal on the issue of the state of the Veterinary profession in our country, Turkey.

To put it very simply, things don’t look good at AT ALL.

We have it all here… Veterinarians that went into the Veterinary faculty not because they loved animals but because they couldn’t get into Medical Faculty, Veterinarians who went to work straight for municipalities with the only purpose of stray dog control and who show a total lack of compassion and empathy for the animals they capture.

Veterinarians who at the sight of a broken leg will, simply, amputate. Or put the cast straight on the skin of the animal.

It is so bad that we have had to come up with the initiative of the Let’s Adopt! Award for veterinary excellence with the only goal of separating the good from the bad and let our members know which vets will save their animal instead of killing it (Prof. Dr. Kursat Oner will definitely NOT qualify for this award).

But then, sometimes, very rarely, we have slight glimmers of hope.

Rare insight into the work of true professionals with a contagious love and passion for saving animal lives.

This is one of those cases.

We have called her Gülümser  (one who always smiles) for she has the sweetest smile on her sweet face, although the people at the clinic call her Joker.

She was brought to an Istanbul veterinary clinic in a box. When the box was opened the staff at the clinic gasped in horror. There it laid, a four week old kitten almost completely devoured by worms. The worms had eaten one of her ears, her lips and most of her tongue. I will spare you from the rest of the diagnosis…

A stray cat in the worst possible conditions you could ever imagine.

Our vet checked the animal thoroughly. The condition was critical.

Still, they decided if the kitten wanted to fight back she would be given all chances to survive.

Gülümser is doing much better. She is a great fighter. She is fighting infection with all her might. She is eating like a lion and constantly asks for attention, purring when you take her in your arms. Sahip Çıkalım! bir hareket. Bu yüzden başından beri dernek-vakıf gibi örgütleşmelerden kaçındık. Bunun birkaç nedeni var:

Organizasyon

Hayvanların ülkemizdeki kaos ve dehşet ortamında yaşamak zorunda olmalarının en önemli nedeni hükümetlerin kendi hayvan hakları yasalarını işleme koymakta gösterdikleri isteksizlik ve beceriksizliktir. Dernekleştikten sonra benzer gözlemlerde bulunmamamız dernekler yasası ve masası nedeniyle çok daha zor olacaktır. Benzer birtakım politik olarak doğru bulunmayan eleştiriden sonra derneğimiz kapatılacaktır. Türkiye hergün benzer örnekleri yaşamaktadır.

Dernekleşmemek bize özgürlük, hareket, konuşma ve eylem serbestliği veriyor. Bu, ülkemizdeki pek çok topluluğun sahip olmadığı birşey.

Öte yandan yine bu konu bağış toplama (fon oluşturma) konusunda bizi ciddi olarak kısıtlıyor.

Fon oluşturmak

İdeal bir dünyada Sahip Çıkalım! kesinlikle bağış toplamak zorunda kalmazdı. Sahip Çıkalım! demek eve bir kedi veya köpek alıp hayatının sonuna kadar bakmak değil sadece. Sahip çıkmak demek aynı zamanda sorumluluklarınıza da sahip çıkmak demek, ve hayvan kurtarmak, arkadaşlar, büyük bir sorumluluk. Sokaktan hayvan kurtarmak demek, bizi çağırıp “bu köpeği/kediyi alın ama ben bakamam, zaten bir Golden’ım veya Siyam’ım var!” demek olamaz. Bu, çöpünüzü ordan oraya aktarmaktan başka birşey değildir. İster inanın ister inanmayın ama pek çok üyemizin “kurtarmak” kelimesinden anladığı şey bu.

Başlangıçta buna izin verdim. Sayı küçüktü ve bu nedenle tüm masrafları ben karşıladım; veteriner faturaları, çocukların ordan oraya nakledilmesi vs. Hayvanını bana bırakıp ortadan yok olanlar ne dediğimi gayet iyi anlayacaklardır. Tabii aranızdan bazıları da kurallara gore oynayıp başından sonuna kadar sorumluluklarına sahip çıktı. Sizlere çok teşekkür ederim. Siz olmasaydınız yaptıklarımızın çoğunu gerçekleştiremezdik.

Ancak durum kontrolden çıktı. Güvene dayalı sistemimiz üyelerimiz tarafından o kadar kullanıldı ki desteklenemez hale geldi, ve şu anda birşeyler yapmazsam çökecek.

Bu günler sonra erdi. Bugünden itibaren Sahip Çıkalım! kurtarıcı tarafından maddi olarak desteklenmeyen hiç bir vakayı üstlenmeyecek. Kısaca, eğer kendi sorumluluklarınıza, başından sonuna kadar sahip çıkmayacaksanız kendi başınızasınız. Tabii alternatifiniz çöpünüzü Asude Ustaoğlu’na (Üsküdar Barınağı) veya Sema Mandev’e (Gürpınar Barınağı) atabilirsiniz. Sorun şu ki, bunu yaptığınız takdirde hayvan bir-iki gün içinde ölür. Ülkemizdeki barınakların içler acısı durumunu biliyorsunuz.

Sahip Çıkalım! Türkiye’deki benzerleri arasında en fazla üyesi olan topluluk. Ayrıca, başka ülkelerden bizi takip edenler sayesinde uluslararası bir açılım da gerçekleştirdik. Sahip Çıkalım! Bugün Kanada, Güney Afrika, ABD ve Almanya’da faaliyet gösteriyoruz. Eylül ayından ise İspanya ve İtalya’ya açılmış olmak için çalışıyoruz.

Yaptığımız şey tarihi, gelenekleri ve ritüelleriyle insanların kendilerini güçlü bağlarla ait hissettikleri bir marka yaratmaktı. Bizimle çalışmış olanlar ne demek istediğimi anlayacaklar.

Bu başarı sizin destek ve birlikteliğiniz olmasa gerçekleşemezdi. Ama kabul edelim ki günün sonunda herşey, komik denecek kadar küçük bir grup insan tarafından yapılıyor. Hayvanları tedaviye götürmek, geçici veya ailesine götürmek, başvuru yapanların incelenmesi… Yani Viktor Larkhill sayfasında gördüğünüz herşey bir kişi hergün sabahın altısından yine sabahın ikisine kadar çalıştığı için gerçekleşiyor, buna doğumgünü dahil.

Elbette çekirdek bir grup gönüllü yardımcı oluyor bana ama bu sadece telefonu elime alıp veya email yazıp yardım istediğimde mümkün olan birşey. Böylesine bir dostluğa ve sadakate şahit olmak benim için gurur verici olsa da system son derece yetersiz.

Eğer Sahip Çıkalım! Operasyonlarını sürdürecek ve büyümeye devam edecekse bir takım görevleri, hatta bütün bir iş alanını gönüllü arkadaşlarımıza devretmemiz gerekiyor. Tabii bu işlerin başından sonuna kadar ve hiç bir mali beklenti olmadan yerine getiriliyor olması koşuluyla. Tüm bunlar, sadece Sahip Çıkalım!’ın misyonu konusunda benimle aynı tutkuyu paylaşıyorsanız mümkün olabilir.

Ne koşulda olursa olsun, mazeret göstermeden burada olabilecek, yardım etmeyi önerdikten sonra ortadan kaybolmayan gönüllüler olmalı bunlar.

Amacım sahip Çıkalım!’ı profesyonel bir organizasyon haline getirmek ama bunun için altı ay-bir yıl kadar daha zamana ihtiyacım var. Şu anda bile güncel maaşlarla tutabileceğimiz profesyonellerle çalışmamızı sağlayacak çeşitli olasılıkları ve yasal yapılanmaları gözden geçiriyoruz.

Ancak şimdi çalışır bir system kurmaya ihtiyacım var. HAftalık raporlarla ilerlemeyi ve konularıyla ilgili son durumu bana aktarabilecek, dikkatlice seçilmiş gönüllü ekipler olmalı bunlar. Aynen bir şirkette olduğu gibi, yerlerinde görevlerini yerine getiremeyenler olduğunda organizasyonlar da çökecektir. Ama bu defa ben birşey yapmayı unuttuğum veya bir başka şeye koşturmaya zaman bulamadığım için değil.

Oluşturmamız gereken departmanlar şunlar:

Lojistik: Hayvanlarımızın bulundukları yerden veterinere, geçici veya kalıcı evlerine, pansiyonlara, havaalanına ulaştırılmalarını koordine edecek en az 2 kişi den oluşacak bir ekibe ihtiyacımız var.

Sağlık: Emaille bize gelen hayvan sağlığıyla ilgili sorulara yanıt verebilecek ve/veya soruları veterinerlerimize ileterek yanıtlarını açıklayacak, ayrıca ülkenin dört bir yanındaki kliniklerde bulunan hayvanalarımızın listesini ve gelişim dosyalarını tutacak gönüllülere ihtiyacımız var.

Barındırma: Geçici aile ve ve pansiyonlarımızı organize edecek ve buralarda barınmakta olan hayvalarımızın kayıtlarını tutacak, geçici aile ve pansiyon ağımızı İstanbul’da ve ülke çapında genişletecek 2 gönüllüye ihtiyacımız var.

Eğitim ve Kültür: Blog sayfamızı yönetecek iki kişiye ihtiyacımız var. Metin yine Viktor Larkhill tarafından oluşturulacak ama izleyici sayısını arttırmak ve tartışmaların yönetilmesi, yorumların yanıtlanması konularında çalışacak iki arkadaşımıza yöneticilik vereceğiz.

Mali İşler: Bu grubun vazifesi faturalarımızın ödenmesini koordine etmek ve fon yaratmak. Biraz oyuncaklı bir iş. Eğer bankacılık, fon yaratımı/yönetimi, muhasebe vs. gibi konularda deneyiminiz varsa sizden haber bekliyorum.

Şimdilik bu kadar. Bundan sonra benim tek başıma yaptığımı 10 kişi yapacak. Çok da zor olmamalı.

Let’s Adopt! New Structure

This is an important email. If you are a member of Let’s Adopt and care the slightest about what we do you want to read this message.

Organization:

Let’s Adopt is a Movement.  From the beginning we shied away from the Association concept for a number of reasons, namely:

1. Most of the chaos and horrors companion animals experience in this country is caused by an inability/lack of will, of the government to implement its own animal welfare law. It would be a terrible conflict of interest to allow ourselves to be regulated by the Organization comission and we would always be under threat of being closed down. After a months and a few arguments about political correctness we would be shot down. In a country with a tradition of shooting down political parties last thing we want is to be shot down by some bureaucrat who doens’t like animals in the first place.
2. Not to be registered allowed us independence, total freedom of movement, action and speech. Something that many organizations in this country simply, do not enjoy.
On the other hand being unregistered meant we would be severely limited when it came to fund raising.

In an ideal world Let’s Adopt would never be in need to fund raise.

Let’s Adopt doesnt only mean getting a dog or cat home and care for him for the rest of his life.  Let’s Adopt means completely owning up to your responsibilities, and rescuing, my friends, is a great responsibility. To rescue an animal from the street and then call us and ask us to take him immediately because you already have a Golden or a Siamese is not rescuing, is moving the trash from one place to another.

Believe it or not this is what a large number of the members of this group consider “rescuing”.

At the beginning I allowed this situation to happen, the numbers were small enough so I financed everything myself, including all veterinary treatments and transport of the animal to his final home. Those of you who simply dumped your rescues on to me will know what I am talking about. There have been of course, many of you who played by the rules, who owned up to your responsibility from the beginning to end.  To you I thank you, because we couldn’t have achieved what we did otherwise.

The situation has, however, ran out of control. Our trust system has been abused by our members, so many times, that in the end has become unsustainable and it will crash unless I do something about it.
Viktor, come here, get this dog and pay for everything, treatments, transport expenses…

Those days are over. From today Let’s Adopt wont accept a single more case who is not fully sponsored by the “rescuer”. Quite simply, if you don’t commit and own up to your responsibilities, from beginning to end, you are on your own. Of course, your alternative is to dump your trash on Asude Ustaoglu (Uskudar Shelter) or Sema Mandev (Gurpinar Sheleter)… The problem is that, if you do that, the animal will die in a matter of days as you all know by know the deplorable conditions of shelters in this country of us.

Logistics:

Let’s Adopt has the largest number of members of any organization of its kind in Turkey.

Our international audience has enabled us to expand internationally and today we are operating in the US, Canada, South Africa and Germany. We will hopefully be expanding onto Spain and Italy in September.

What we did was to create a brand, a brand with its own history, traditions and rituals, and a brand that people felt very strongly connected with. Those of you who work with us know precisely what I mean. This achievement couldnt have happen without your support and involvement, but let’s face it, most of the work is done by a ridiculously number of people, taking dogs for treatment, moving dogs to foster homes, screening applicants, basically everything you see happening on Viktor Larkhill’s homepage happens because one person works from six in the morning to two in the evening, every day, including birthdays.
I am, of course, assisted by a small number of hardcore volonteers, but this assistance only happens when I pick up the phone or send an email and ask for help. To witness such friendship and loyalty is a source of pride to me, and very flattering, but this system is also very inefficient.

If Let’s Adopt is to continue operating, and growing, I need to be able to delegate tasks, entire areas of work onto volunteers, whilst being completely sure that those tasks will be performed fully, from beginning to end without the expectation of financial reward,  simply because YOU share the same passion about the mission of Let’s Adopt as I do.
Volunteers who will be there, no matter what, no excuses. Volunteers who will not disappear after offering help.

It is my goal for the future to turn Let’s Adopt into a professional organization, but this will not happen for at least another six months to a year. I am currently considering several possibilities and legal structures that will enable me to hire professionals and to pay competitive salaries.
But for now, I need to be able to create a working system. To create several departments and leave them entirely in the hands of carefully chosen teams of volunteers who will report on the weekly progress. Like in any company, if those people in charge fail to perform the organization will crumble… the difference being that if it crumbles, animals will pay with their lives and suffering.

We need to create the following departments:

Logistics: We need to put together a team of at least two people to handle occasional transports of animals from their current location to their foster/final homes, veterinarians, pensions, airport…
Heatlh-care: We need two people to answer email questions related to health -care and/or direct those questions to our approved vets. Also to keep track of the animals we currently have in clinics across the country.
Hospitality: We need two people to coordinate our network of foster homes and pensions. Keep updated track of which ones are available and which ones are not as well as help us increase the network of foster homes and pensions in Istanbul and in other cities.
Education and Culture: We need two people to run our blog. The text will still be produced by Viktor Larkhill but we will give administrative powers to two volunteers who will be in charge of expanding its audience as well as moderate answers/postings.
Finance: To coordinate payments and raise funds. This one is the tricky one…. If you have any experience in fund raising/accounting/banking etc I am waiting to hear from you.

So this is it for now. 10 people who will do what one has been doing until now. It should be easy.
